Valle de Zonda, San Juan, Argentina
Xumek Reserve Malbec/Syrah is an undiscovered red wine gem from the San Juan region of Argentina, just north of Mendoza. San Juan is Argentina's second largest wine producing province and one of the sunniest places on earth, with fewer than 30 cloudy days per year. It is rapidly gaining recognition for producing the best Syrahs in Argentina. Xumek Reserve Blend is 60% Malbec and 40% Syrah. Xumek means Sun in the language of the Huarpes, the original inhabitants of the larger Cuyo region. The single-vineyard source of this wine lies in the Zonda Valley at the foot of the Andes Mountains, at an elevation of 2900 feet. The Santa Sylvia estate comprises 120 hectares of vineyards, 165 ha of olive trees and a Nandu farm, all developed with great respect for the environment. Steve Tanzer rated this wine 88 points, and we think it's even better! Only 1000 cases produced.
Xumek Reserve Malbec/Syrah is bright ruby red in color with an alluring nose of black cherry, graphite, mocha and sweet oak. It offers rich flavors of dark berries, chocolate, pepper and game. Medium-full in body, it has a silky texture with broad tannins and a long, velvety finish. The wine was aged for 12 months in medium-toast French oak barrels, 40% new. It can be enjoyed now and will continue to improve with age for another 4-6 years.
Enjoy Xumek Reserve Malbec/Syrah with grilled steak, roast beef, BBQ ribs, rich vegetable dishes and sharp cheeses.
