Zonda Chardonnay-Viognier 2009 Valle de Zonda, San Juan, Argentina
Zonda Chardonnay-Viognier is a new white wine gem from the San Juan region of Argentina, just north of Mendoza. San Juan is Argentina's second largest wine producing province and one of the sunniest places on earth, with fewer than 30 cloudy days per year. XumeK means Sun in the language of the Huarpe people, the original inhabitants of the Cuyo region, which includes the provinces of San Juan, Mendoza, San Luis and La Rioja. Under this label, Santa Sylvia has been selling wine since its first vintage in 2002. The Zonda label was created in 2009 for more modern, easy-drinking wines. The Santa Sylvia estate is the site of a relatively new venture that comprises 200 hectares under vine, 165 hectares of olive trees, and a Nandu farm (the Argentine equivalent of the ostrich). It is located in the upper Zonda Valley, at the foot of the Andes Mountains, at 3,000 feet above sea level, in Southern San Juan. High-altitude and a semi-desert climate provide a long, dry, sunny growing season with hot days and cool nights, allowing grapes to achieve full ripeness and develop complex fruit aromas, while still retaining acidity. A constant dry wind known as the Zonda flows down the Andes and provides vines with further protection from disease, preventing any use of pesticides or other chemical products.
Zonda Chardonnay-Viognier is medium in body with good acidity. It is a 50/50 blend of Chardonnay and Viognier, offering aromas and flavors of green apples, citrus, honey and spice. This refreshing white blend is long and balanced on the finish.
Enjoy Zonda Chardonnay-Viognier with chicken empanadas, grilled shrimp, roast chicken and Cobb salad.
