Daniel Bouland Chiroubles Chatenay is a beautiful expression of Gamay from the excellent 2018 vintage in Beaujolais. Daniel Bouland is a great producer of old-fashioned Morgon and Chiroubles. From less than 7 hectares of old vines in the Douby, Côte de Py, and Delys, lieux dits of Morgon, plus small parcels in Chiroubles and Cote de Brouilly, he makes wines that can age 20 years, and are comparable to fine Côte de Nuits Burgundies. His Corcellette Morgon vineyard is 60-75 year-old vines. De Lys (between Corcellette and Ville Morgon) was planted in 1926. In 2014 he acquired another old-vines parcel - Bellevue, on schiste and granite. All of his grapes are hand-harvested and vinified with full clusters in order to extract all the organoleptic qualities and bottled unfiltered.
Daniel Bouland Chiroubles Chatenay comes from a parcel in lieu-dit Chatenay that lies about one km to the north of Corcelette, high on the hill of Chiroubles. The soil is friable sandstone, and the wine the epitome of Chiroubles - sensational aromatics and brimming with fruit.
"Bouland's 2018 Chiroubles bursts with aromas of ripe blackberries, red plums, violets and cracked black pepper. On the palate, it's medium to full-bodied, ample and layered, with a succulent core of fruit, fine concentration and a long, lip-smacking finish. An especially gourmand rendition of this cuvée, it hails from a steep hillside site and is matured in tank."-William Kelley, Wine Advocate, 92 points!
