Giacomo Conterno Barbera d'Alba Cascina Francia is about as good as it gets for the Barbera grape from Piedmont. This 2009 vintage received scores of 93 points from both Parker and Tanzer! In the words of Antonio Galloni for Wine Advocate, "The Cascina Francia dazzles with its combination of expressive, generous fruit and insistent minerality. Sweet herbs, roses, spices, anise, licorice and leather add complexity to a core of radiant fruit. This is a regal, aristocratic Barbera of the highest level." Very limited, so don't hesitate!
The Giacomo Conterno winery is run by Roberto Conterno, great-grandson of the founder. The producer Giacomo Conterno is clearly one of the two greatest names in all of Piemonte, the other being Bruno Giacosa. Their flagship wine is the Riserva Barolo named Monfortino, celebrated as one of the world's best red wines. Since 1974, when the family purchased the superb Cascina Francia vineyard, all of the Conterno Barolos have been made entirely from Cascina Francia Nebbiolo. This same 16-hectare vineyard is also the source of grapes for this beautiful Barbera!
Giacomo Conterno Barbera d'Alba Cascina Francia is dark ruby red in color. It offers a delightful nose of red berries, black cherries, roses, anise, leather and mineral notes. Medium in body with perfect acidity and silky tannins, it offers intense, sweet flavors of raspberries, black cherries, vanilla and spice. This gorgeous red will drink well for 15-20 years. It has length, richness and finesse on the finish.
