Central Coast, California
Wind Gap Chardonnay Yuen is a delightful and rare experience in California Chardonnay, showing off the natural beauty of the Chardonnay grape. For his Wind Gap wines, Pax Mahle seeks out unique vineyard sites where geographic "wind gaps" allow cold ocean breezes to cool the vineyards. Blended in equal parts from James Berry and Brosseau Vineyards in California's Central Coast, this wine epitomizes the spectacular focus and purity of wines grown in soils of limestone and granite. It is the bottled essence of liquid minerals. The name Yuen translates as "a connection that is meant to be." It was certainly true for us when we visited this small winery in Forestville during September 2012 crush and tasted this beautiful wine gem--an immediate keeper! Only 437 cases produced.
Wind Gap Chardonnay Yuen is soft yellow-gold in color with a stony nose of green apples, citrus and mineral notes. Full-bodied with lively acidity, the wine offers flavors of apples, lemon and spice, with no oak. Native yeasts, concrete fermentation, no new oak, low (12.8%) alcohol and intense, expressive flavors make this a truly special wine. Ready to be enjoyed now and over the next 5-6 years, it has gorgeous length and complexity on the finish.
Enjoy Wind Gap Chardonnay Yuen with steamers, roast chicken, grilled halibut, lobster salad and cheeses. The acidity and freshness of this wine make it perfect as well to serve with your holiday turkey or ham, with all the trimmings!
