Tolaini Al Passo Toscana IGT is a super Tuscan red wine gem from a relatively young estate in Castelnuovo Berardenga. The wine is 85% Sangiovese and 15% Merlot. A small, circular forest tops the tallest hill on the Tolaini Estate. This unique forest is known as "al passo," where centuries ago local landlords hunted using trained birds as decoys to lure the prey into the passage (passo.) Today this hill still offers magical, breathtaking panoramic views of the countryside and sunsets over the towers of Siena. With superb ratings from the world's leading critics over the past several vintages, this gem is a super value among super Tuscans and will not remain undiscovered for long! The 2011 vintage was rated 91 points by Robert Parker's Wine Advocate and also received 91-point scores from Wine Spectator and James Suckling. Gambero Rosso awarded this wine two glasses for the 2009 vintage! Michel Rolland consults on winemaking. Organic.
Tolaini Al Passo is dark ruby red in color with full body and silky tannins. Spicy notes of French oak rise above distinct aromas of raspberries, cherries, vanilla, leather and dried violets. The palate has a backbone of Sangiovese, a roundness of Merlot and enhanced body from the oak. The fruit purity and varietal signatures are testament to the meticulous care given to the young vines. This red offers flavors of black cherry, cassis, vanilla and spice. Aged for 12 months in French oak, it is beautifully balanced to enjoy now or to cellar for 10-12 years. The finish is rich, long and polished.
Enjoy Tolaini Al Passo with veal, pasta, osso bucco, and aged cheeses.
