Castilla y Leon, Spain
Valduero Yunquera Blanco de Albillo is a gorgeous Spanish white wine gem from one of the top wineries in Ribera del Duera. Albillo is an indigenous grape variety that Valduero has recovered by planting a single vineyard in the heart of Ribera del Duero, renowned for its red wines. Limited production of 2850 cases for the 2015 vintage. Gold Medal, Berliner Wein Trophy!
Valduero Yunquera Blanco de Albillo regularly receives scores of 90+ points from two of the top wine critics, Tanzer and Wine Spectator. Stephen Tanzer's International Wine Cellar has not yet rated this vintage, but offered interesting information about this unique grape variety: "Albillo, a.k.a. albillo mayor, is native to the area and although these vines are planted in the Ribera del Duero zone, the variety is not allowed to bear the designation--hence the generic, overarching Castillo y Leon moniker. There are reportedly just over five hectares of albillo left in Spain." Wine Spectator gave this vintage a surprising 87 points, with this tasting note: "Offering peach and lilac aromas, this lively white adds grapefruit and ginger notes on the palate, with lively, tangy acidity providing power through the ginger finish. Not complex, but has good energy." We'd add to this tasting note a distinctive note of banana on the palate-a rare treat among all the wines we've ever tasted!
