Les Darons by Jeff Carrel is a beautiful red blend from the Languedoc. Grenache and Carignan have long been cultivated in Southern France and represent the "forefathers" of the Languedoc Appellation's red wines. An homage showcasing these varietals, this wine was subsequently labeled "Les Darons", the affectionate expression for "The Parents" in the Parisian suburbs where winemaker Jeff Carrel was born.
"What looks like another great vintage here, the 2015 AOP Languedoc les Darons is made from 75% Grenache, 20% Syrah and 5% Carignan; grapes were completely destemmed, and fermented and aged all in concrete tanks. It sees absolutely no oak whatsoever. This medium to full-bodied, plump, rounded, downright sexy 2015 has lots of blueberry, violets, and jammy black cherry aromas and flavors; it has terrific purity of fruit, good acidity and an overriding sense of elegance. If it came from a more prestigious appellation in the southern Rhone, it would go for three times the price. Jeff Carrel (who seems to work with more and more wineries each year) makes a number of wines from throughout the Languedoc and Roussillon. There's some hidden gems in here and all of these latest 2015s are enjoyable wines."-Jeb Dunnuck, Wine Advocate, 91-93 points!
