Stellenbosch, South Africa
The 2009 vintage of de Trafford Syrah 393 is a stunning red wine gem from the Stellenbosch wine region of South Africa. De Trafford Winery is situated on the beautiful Mont Fleur farm set at the top of a beautiful valley above Stellenbosch. It saddles the Stellenbosch and Helderberg Mountains at an elevation of 1200 ft. We made the trek up in April 2009 to meet owner/winemaker David Trafford and taste his latest releases. It was well worth the trip! De Trafford produces a minuscule 3500 cases per year, limited to selected varietals: Chenin Blanc, Cabernet Sauvignon, Shiraz and Merlot. The wines typically sell out within weeks of release. In just 10 years, David Trafford has become one of South Africa's top winemakers and one of only 38 invited members of the prestigious Cape Winemakers Guild. His 2009 Syrah 393 (named for the elevation of the vineyard) received a 95-point rating from Wine Spectator-the highest ever for a South African wine!
"Loaded with blackberry, boysenberry and raspberry pâte de fruit flavors, this boasts accents of melted black licorice snap and roasted apple wood, delivering a long, charcoal-framed finish. Features range, depth and serious grip. Rock-solid and vivacious. Best from 2014 through 2022. 42 cases imported." -JM, Wine Spectator. Only 525 cases produced.
