Dr Lippold Empress Josephine's Riesling is a delightful medium-dry Riesling from the Mosel of Germany. In 2006 a lifelong dream came true when Dr. Lippold was able to aquire from the Pfeiffer family in Ürzig two small parcels of the family vineyards: The Weltersberg, under Napoleon classified as a "Grand Cru", and the Neuberg, a former "Premier Cru". In the vineyard and in the cellar he is working to create very individual, artisanal wines under the label Dr. Lippold. These wines clearly express the unique (red slate) terroir and vintage profile. The second label, Josephine´s Riesling is vinified from Spätlese grapes of the Neuberg vineyard together with grapes of equal quality from neighboring sites.
Empress Josephine's Riesling was picked at Spatlese levels, giving the wine a richer mouthfeel, delicious tropical and stone fruit notes, and refreshing acidity on the finish. Napoleon's wife, the Empress Josephine, visited Germany in the early 1800s and was very impressed with the Rieslings from the area. In turn, German Rieslings became quite fashionable among wine drinkers and were the top-flight wines on restaurant lists. This wine is an homage to Empress Josephine's love of German Riesling. It offers a rich mouthfeel with delicious tropical and stone fruit notes. Refreshing acidity on the finish.
Enjoy Empress Josephine's Riesling over the next 3-4 years with oysters, pan-fried trout, grilled shrimp, fried chicken, and spicy Asian fare.
