Cotes Catalanes, Roussillon, France
Wine Advocate 91 points on the 2016 vintage!
Lafage Bastide Miraflors Rosé is a beautiful dry rosé of Mourvedre and old-vines Grenache Gris from the Roussillon wine region of southwestern France. The wine's official appellation is Cotes Catalanes IGP. Deep in this Catalan region of southwestern France, Domaine Lafage blends juicy, aromatic wines that deliver the rare combination of distinctiveness and affordability. Although only in his thirties, Jean-Marc Lafage already has over 15 years of world-class winemaking to his credit. The Lafage Estate covers 200 hectares near Perpignan, with spectacular views of the Mediterranean and the Pyrenees separating France and Spain. Named after an old estate located in the heart of Domaine Lafage, Mas Miraflors, the Miraflors Rose is sourced from old vines of Grenache Gris, nearing 80 years old, planted near the Mediterranean. Added to this is some Mourvedre that Jean-Marc planted here about 15 years ago. This a direct press rose with the color coming from the skins of the pink Grenache Gris berries, and naturally, from the much darker Mourvedre. It is aged in tank for 4 months before bottling.
Jeb Dunnuck described the 2016 vintage in glowing terms: "Light in color, yet not in flavor, the 2016 Côtes du Roussillon Miraflors Rose (70% Mourvèdre and 30% Grenache Gris) offers terrific notes of white cherries, strawberries and rose petals in a medium-bodied, layered, impeccably balanced style that's just hard to resist. It doesn't have the chiseled feel of the Grande Cuvee, but it offers just as much pleasure."-Jeb Dunnuck, Wine Advocate, 91 points!
