Muddy Water James Hardwick Vineyard Riesling is a single-vineyard white wine gem for those who appreciate a bit of sweetness on the noble Riesling grape. Founded in 1991, Muddy Water is the oldest certified organic vineyard in North Canterbury. The majority of the vines are ungrafted and the wine is made entirely with natural yeasts and a hands-off style. "hand-crafted no compromise' was the statement written on the first barrel of wine, and today the team stands by it. The estate consists of roughly 36 hectares- 12 planted to vines.
Muddy Water James Hardwick Riesling is a classic example of Waipara Riesling, and it shows the flavors we see consistently from this wonderful James Hardwick Vineyard. Citrus and white-fleshed stone-fruits in a balanced off-dry style are signature expressions from this block, with individual vintages running the gamut from fresh and crisp through to sweeter toffee-like silkiness. An underlying chalky minerality speaks loudly of its clay-lime soils. Yellow-gold in color. Rich and inviting on the nose with peach and rock-melon fruits flowing through to an expanse of elderflower, wild fennel and cloves. Similar flow through the palate with nectarine, preserved lemon, baking spices and the smoke of Manuka wood. Beautiful intensity, length and generously layered.
