Campo de Borja, Spain
Borsao Berola is a beautiful blend of 80% Garnacha and 20% Syrah hailed by many of the world's wine critics as an awesome value. We consider this wine one of the top gems of Spanish wine. The grapes come from vineyards that are between 35 and 40 years old. Located on uneven terrain at an altitude of 600 to 700 meters, these vineyards yield under four and a half tons of grapes per hectare, affording superb richness and concentration in the wine.
Wine Spectator 90 points - A round, plush texture carries ripe, fruity flavors of kirsch, blackberry and tangerine, with notes of vanilla, cola and mountain herb. Light, firm tannins keep this grounded, kept lively by citrusy acidity. Garnacha, Syrah and Cabernet Sauvignon. Drink now through 2024. 12,000 cases made. -TM.April/2018
Wine Advocate 90 points - The 2014 Berola is a blend of Garnacha and 20% Syrah aged in French and American oak barrels for 14 months. It has a similar profile to the Bole, but with more influence from the elevage, with Garnacha that was close to getting in the blend of Tres Picos, and Syrah that could almost make it into Zarihs. The nose combines, smoky, spicy and creamy notes with aromas of ripe berries and a touch of earth. It's a matter of style, but I like it less when the oak is more obvious, even if the wider audience might prefer it. However, this should work very well with food and better integrate the oak with a little more time in bottle. 72,000 bottles produced..June/2017
James Suckling 90 points - Plenty of poached raspberry fruit on the nose with a swathe of ripe blackberry-soaked tannins on the palate. Doughy and ripe finish. Drink now..July/2017
Jeb Dunnuck 91 points - A unique blend of 70% Garnacha, 20% Syrah and 10% Cabernet Sauvignon aged in French and American oak, the 2014 Berola sports a deep purple color as well as lots of plum, currants, sagebrush, and exotic flower-like aromas and flavors. With an herbal edge (no doubt from the Cabernet), this full-bodied blend has a great mid-palate as well as plenty of chocolate on the finish. Drink it anytime over the coming 2-4 years..March/2018
Decanter 90 points - Aromas of summer pudding and vanilla custard, layers of bramble fruit. Concentrated black fruit palate, loganberry, toasty vanilla oak on long finish..May/2017
Enjoy Borsao Berola over the next 3-4 years with roast pork, grilled vegetables, burgers and cheeses.
