Corton Renardes Grand Cru, Burgundy, France
Burghound 91 points; View from the Cellar
Michel Gaunoux Corton Renardes Grand Cru is a beautiful red Burgundy from the Renardes climat within the Corton Grand Cru vineyard. The Corton appellation itself is the Côte de Beaune's only Grand Cru appellation for red wine and is the largest Grand Cru of Burgundy. Domaine Michel Gaunoux, first started in 1885 by Alexandre Gaunoux, has a long, enviable track record for producing brilliant Pommards (not to mention superb Cortons and Beaunes), that age gracefully and develop complexity as profound as all but the very top handful of grand cru terroirs of the Côte de Nuits. Given the legacy of great wines this estate has produced over the course of the last hundred and twenty years, it is remarkable that the wines of Michel Gaunoux are not better known, but the domaine prefers to keep a low profile while continuing to turn out their interpretation of great traditional Burgundy. But make no mistake, this is one of the greatest red wine estates in all of Burgundy.
"The 2013 Renardes from Domaine Gaunoux is also an excellent bottle in the making, but it is more classically reserved out of the blocks than the relatively suave Pommard premiers. The bouquet is pure and primary, delivering scents of cherries, red berries, a touch of coriander seed, roses, vinesmoke and a superb base of soil. On the palate the wine is deep, full-bodied, pure and very promising, with an excellent core, fine focus and grip, ripe tannins and a long, nascently complex and zesty finish. Another stellar bottle in the making. 2025-2075."-John Gilman, View from the Cellar
