Staffelter Hof Paradies Riesling Feinherb is a white wine gem for those who love the noble Riesling grape. Staffelter Hof is a contrast between being one of the oldest wineries in the world, founded in 862 and young Jan Klein, the current winemaker. Jan has converted the vineyards to organic practices, one of the few in the Middle Mosel, certified by EcoVin. He cultivates 7 hectares in Kröv, Dhron and Piesport and beautifully renders a balanced, just off-dry style. Jan is a tireless advocate of the Mosel and works with the Klitze Kleine Ring and its Bergrettung (mountain rescue) program to save its steep slope vineyards that may have otherwise been abandoned.
Staffelter Hof Paradies Riesling is an estate-level off-dry wine that possesses great acidity from its steep southeast facing sloped vineyards. The wolf on the label is based on a legend that long ago the Abbot of the Stravelot Monastery that founded Staffelter hof ordered a wolf to carry stones because his donkey had died in the heat. The wolf obliged, and since then has been the 'wappentier,' or guardian, of the winery. This wine is delightfully floral with lemon and a hint of thyme and lots of energy. It offers rich flavors of apricots, green apples, citrus and distinctive minerality. It was fermented in stainless steel, with no oak. This wine is elegant and refreshing with a long, tangy finish.
Enjoy Staffelter Hof Paradies Riesling over the next 3-4 years with pan-fried trout, grilled shrimp, fried chicken, and spicy Thai dishes.
