"John Kongsgaard is in search of the Holy Grail and these are the most interesting, naturally made wines one will find on Planet Earth."-THE WINE ADVOCATE, ROBERT PARKER
"Fifth-generation Napa natives, Maggy and I began our endeavor in the 1970s planting The Judge vineyard on the Kongsgaard family land near Napa. The inaugural Kongsgaard wines came in 1996. We now produce The Judge, Chardonnay, VioRous, Albariño, Syrah, Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon in our underground winery-a cave dug into the volcanic rock, high on the eastern rim of the Napa Valley where we have planted a spectacular mountain vineyard. We also direct the farming under long-term contracts on several perfect acres in the Napa Carneros and near the winery. These intensely farmed, shy-bearing vineyards and our traditional low-intervention winemaking produce powerful, graceful wines-vivid expressions of vineyard and variety. Production is limited to what we, with our son Alex, can make with our own hands." -JOHN KONGSGAARD
"The 2012 Syrah is a compelling example of this varietal. It is 100% Syrah, but it smells as if it includes a large quantity of Viognier. Huge notes of flowers, honeysuckle and lavender jump from the glass of this dense purple-colored wine along with notes of scorched earth, charcoal, smoked meats and a touch of steak tartar. A wine of great intensity and magnificent concentration, it could easily achieve perfection in a few years. Drink now through 2026." October/2014-Robert Parker, Wine Advocate 99 points!
