M.A. Monticelli Barolo Pietrin is a wonderful expression of the Nebbiolo grape from Piedmont. It is the product of a Napa Valley-based winery working with the Franco Conterno family, an iconic and historic family in Barolo. Their grape growing and winemaking philosophy is based on modern technology, tradition and a respect for the environment, three ideals that M.A. Monticelli holds in high regard.
The Franco Conterno winery, Cascina Sciulun, is located in the hamlet of Bussia di Monforte d'Alba in the heart of Barolo. They take care in organically farming their land with aeration of the soil and fertilization. The vineyards are managed with great attention to detail to ensure the highest quality fruit. The elegant and refined wines are produced with native fermentations, modern equipment and traditional practices. Franco Conterno is comprised of 18 hectares of vineyards located in Monforte D'Alba, Barolo, Castiglione Falletto, Novello and Madonna di Como. The elevation ranges from 250 to 400 meters above sea level, and the soils are made up of sand, silt and clay. The vineyard sites have an excellent south/south-west exposure to promote ripening.
M.A. Monticelli Barolo is brick red in color with a nose of cherry, raspberry, strawberry, mocha, leather and floral notes. It is full-bodied with bright acidity, firm tannins, and rich flavors of raspberries, cherries, anise, oak and spice. This big red will reward several years of cellaring and drink best from 2019-2027. It is long and rich on the finish.
