Pic Saint-Loup, Languedoc, France
Mas Foulaquier L'Orphée is a beautiful red wine gem of Syrah and Grenache from the Languedoc. Winemaker Pierre Jéquier, a native of Switzerland and formerly an architect, created Mas Foulaquier in 1998 following an exhaustive search for his dream wine estate. Situated in the most northerly corner of Languedoc's most northerly appellation, Pic Saint-Loup, the 8ha of existing vines were at the time just 8 years old but happened to be planted on some great terroir. Now, at more than 25 years of age, those vines are the source of a quite brilliant set of wines. Pierre's wife and fellow winemaker, Blandine Chauchet, joined the team in 2003, bringing with her the ownership of a further 3ha of 50+ year-old Grenache and Carignan in the lieu-dit of "Les Tonillières". The vines are certified organic, and since 2007, are also certified biodynamic by Demeter. In the cellar, the wines all are raised in Foulaquier's signature, low-intervention style - native yeasts, no filtering, and minimal sulfur added only at bottling.
Mas Foulaquier L'Orphée is the flagship cuvée of the estate because it combines spice and gluttony thanks to the perfect balance between Syrah and Grenache. L'Orphée (The Orpheus) is a migratory bird that comes from Africa and crosses the Mediterranean. The warbler can be seen and heard in the vineyards of Mas Foulaquier. The wine is dense and purple in color thanks to the presence of Syrah. The very fruity (black fruits), floral (rose) and spicy (bay leaf) nose combine delicacy, suppleness and spice.
Enjoy Mas Foulaquier L'Orphée with lamb chops, skirt steak, burgers and grilled vegetables.
