Anselmo Mendes Passaros Escolha Vinho Verde is a beautifully refreshing and flavorful white wine from the renowned Vinho Verde region of Portugal. It is a blend of 60% Alvarinho and 40% Loureiro.
With a true passion for the region and its most emblematic varieties such as Alvarinho and Loureiro, Anselmo Mendes is an inevitable reference. With vineyards located in the granitic slopes of Moncao & Melgaco and in the river banks of the Lima river, his wines are a testament to the potential of Vinho Verde. Anselmo Mendes is the quintessential inside man - born the son of grape growers in Moncão, one of the two top regions (along with Melgaço) for Alvarinho. He has studied agronomy and oenology, worked in Bordeaux and now consults for many wineries throughout Portugal.
"The 2019 Alvarinho / Loureiro Pássaros Escolha is a roughly equal blend coming in at 12.5% alcohol. Drier than last year's, it has only 1.5 grams per liter of residual sugar, plus 6.8 of total acidity. Feeling solid in the mid-palate, this shows good acidity to support the fruit and the fine, lingering finish that I expect. Delicious, but serious and beautifully structured, it left me wondering if this might be the best since the 2015, granting that it is hard to make close calls when they aren't all here. The overall quality is consistent and high. Drink 2020-2027"-Mark Squires, Wine Advocate, 90 points!
