Calabria, Italy

Sergio Arcuri Liberaisensi Bianco is a beautiful white wine gem from Calabria, the "toe" of the boot-shaped peninsula of southern Italy. It is 100% Greco Bianco.

Sergio Arcuri, who works with his brother Francesco, is a fourth-generation grower. The family's 3.7 hectares lie in the heart of the Ciro region at 105 meters of altitude. This is on Calabria's south-eastern edge, overlooking the Gulf of Taranto & Puglia beyond. Sergio is lucky enough to have old vines; planted in 1948 using the original 'alberello' trellising system (for quality), along with more recent 'cordon speronata' (as found in Bordeaux, for machines & quantity) planted in the 1980s. The land is worked in accordance with organic practices. Yields are limited to 42 hl/ha.

This is our most recent find from our cult Calabrian producer and Slow Wine award-winner Sergio Arcuri. This is a cross between a traditional white wine and an "orange wine." This is actually how white wines were always made. The process of orange wines refers to the pigment that is left of the must/juice after it stays in contact with the grape skins. Sergio's 'Liberaisensi' Bianco is made from grapes from old Greco vines and 20% is set aside to age on the skins. This gives this dry, fruity white wine a more interesting flavor and a broader backbone profile. Stone fruit and sea salt best describe this outstanding 'orange-sque' selection. "Free your senses" and try some Liberaisensi!

Enjoy Sergio Arcuri Liberaisensi over the next 4-5 years with grilled swordfish, chicken, veal Milanese and cheeses.
