Sawbuck Chardonnay is now in its seventh vintage from John & Lane Giguiere, founders of R.H. Phillips. After selling the company to Vincor International in 2000, the couple started Crew Wine Company in 2005, with Sawbuck as one of its four new wine brands. Sawbuck wines are made from grapes grown in the northern edge of the California wine country: Mendocino and Yolo Counties. Both are unique growing regions that are left of center of the mainstream, offering wines of great quality at a value price. True gems! The new company's vision is simple: "Produce wines we love to drink at prices we don't mind paying." True to its name, this Sawbuck can be yours for a little over ten bucks per bottle on a case purchase of 12 bottles! Robert Parker called this wine a "spectacular bargain" and gave it a rating of 88 points!
Sawbuck Chardonnay is 100% Dunnigan Hills Chardonnay. Caramel apples, creme brûlée and toasty oak highlight the aromas. The flavors are an enticing combination of melon and butter, baked apples and lime zest. This well-balanced Chardonnay is rich, but not heavy handed. 67% of the wine was barrel fermented; the lees stirred to add complexity and an appealing creaminess. 10 months barrel aging added the rich texture. The remainder was cold fermented in stainless steel to retain the fresh fruit flavors and crisp acidity. The finish has an intriguing European minerality and a little lemon zest.
Enjoy Sawbuck Chardonnay over the next 4-5 years with grilled chicken, baked swordfish, Cobb salad and cheeses.
